How long does it take
to become an FNP?
GCU’s MSN FNP program can be completed by taking one course at a time via online classes with in-person clinicals.2 Most online courses are eight weeks in length, but several core classes span 16 weeks.
Is becoming an FNP
worth it?
An MSN FNP degree is designed for individuals who want to provide in-depth, ongoing medical care for individuals and/or families. FNPs often build strong relationships with their patients by offering treatment plans, prevention education and advocacy services. If you have a specific passion for pediatrics, adolescence or gerontology, earning an MSN FNP degree can provide you with the necessary education to then acquire certification.
Is the MSN FNP
program difficult?
The program is rigorous in order to help prepare graduates for the challenging nature of this advanced nursing career. An FNP is categorized as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who has the education and credentials to specialize in a specific patient population or set of skills. Therefore, the MSN FNP program includes intensive curricula spanning all major areas of family nursing, hands-on skills labs and hundreds of hours of supervised clinicals. Graduates of this program will be eligible to sit for the certification exam in this specialty.

COVID-19 has adversely affected the global economy and data from 2020 to 2023 may be atypical compared to prior years. Accordingly, data shown is effective August 2024, which can be found here: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives and Nurse Practitioners, retrieved on March 26, 2025.

The earnings referenced were reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives and Nurse Practitioners as of May 2024, retrieved on July 1, 2025. Due to COVID-19, data from 2020 to 2023 may be atypical compared to prior years. BLS calculates the median using salaries of workers nationwide with varying levels of education and experience. It does not reflect the earnings of GCU graduates as nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners, nor does it reflect the earnings of workers in one city or region of the country or a typical entry-level salary. Median income is the statistical midpoint for the range of salaries in a specific occupation. It represents what you would earn if you were paid more money than half the workers in an occupation, and less than half the workers in an occupation. It may give you a basis to estimate what you might earn at some point if you enter this career. Grand Canyon University can make no guarantees on individual graduates’ salaries. Your employability will be determined by numerous factors over which GCU has no control, such as the employer the graduate chooses to apply to, the graduate’s experience level, individual characteristics, skills, etc. against a pool of candidates.
